Tallahassee's New Parks Keep Slipping. Its New Trails Are Already Open.

The outdoor projects in Tallahassee that drew the most coverage this year are still behind construction fencing. The ones you can use this weekend opened in April and May with almost no announcement. Three Blueprint trails were finished this spring: a mountain bike single-track on the southwest side, a greenway in Southwood, and a lakeside trail on the east side. Blueprint's own report to its board in June confirmed all three openings. Meanwhile, Northeast Park has slipped from a late-2026 target to mid-2027, and Market District Park is now aiming for early 2027.

Each of the three trails was attached to something that was already there: an open nature park, a neighborhood park, or a private development that agreed to share the work.

Open Now, Coming Later

Here's how things stand as of Blueprint's project snapshots dated October 1, 2026, plus the June board report.

Project Area Status
Debbie Lightsey Nature Park single-track Capital Circle SW Opened April 2026
Southwood Greenway / Tram Road Trail Four Oaks Park to Capital Circle SE Opened April 2026
Upper Lake Lafayette Trail Next to Fallschase Opened May 2026
Orange-Meridian Park S. Orange Ave. and S. Meridian St. Construction finishing late 2026
Market District Park West of Maclay Blvd. Completion expected early 2027
Northeast Park Centerville Road Public opening expected mid-2027
Capital Cascades Trail Segment 4 Lake Bradford Rd. to Springhill Rd. Started September 2026, finishing early 2028

The top three rows are where you can go this fall. The rest of this post covers each one and what made it possible, then the parks that are still coming.

Debbie Lightsey's Single-Track Was a Promise in 2023

When Blueprint cut the ribbon on Debbie Lightsey Nature Park in October 2023, WFSU reported about 1.3 miles of trail, wetland boardwalks, a butterfly garden, a playground and picnic areas. The mountain bike trail was still waiting to start construction.

That trail opened in April 2026. Blueprint's May 2026 project snapshot lists it as a 2-mile single-track, next to about 1.6 miles of multiuse paths and boardwalks. An earlier Blueprint annual report said 2.2 miles and described the trail as built for both beginner and experienced riders. I'm going with the newer 2-mile figure.

The trail was shaped by volunteers as much as by contractors. The Tallahassee Mountain Bike Association credits volunteer Jeremy Floyd with designing and championing the bike trail together with the City. That same TMBA report describes weekly Munson Monday rides and monthly trail workdays at Munson, Red Bug, Magnolia, Alford and Maclay. So the club behind this trail already has a regular calendar. If you'd like to ride with people who know the local dirt, start there.

The park is a 113-acre passive park east of Capital Circle SW and south of Jackson Bluff Road. Visit Tallahassee lists the access address as 1317 Capital Circle SW, with the entrance at Baldwin Park Drive and a lighted parking lot. One caveat: I couldn't find a published source that marks where the single-track starts inside the park, so expect to look around a bit on your first visit.

Southwood's Greenway Starts at a Park People Already Use

The Southwood Greenway runs 1.2 miles through Four Oaks Park and along Tram Road. Blueprint describes it as tying Southwood into the City's larger trail network. The section from Four Oaks Park to Capital Circle Southeast was finished and opened in April 2026.

Four Oaks Park makes this trail work. When it opened in 2023, the Tallahassee Democrat placed it at the corner of Four Oaks Boulevard and Tram Road, with entrances on Four Oaks Boulevard and Schoolhouse Road. The paper listed a playground, multipurpose fields, basketball, beach volleyball, pickleball courts, open space and a cricket pitch. Because the greenway starts in a park that already has all that, one family can split up. One person walks or rides to Capital Circle and back while the kids stay at the playground.

Blueprint hasn't published as-built details on the trail's surface, width or dedicated parking. Older planning documents described a paved path at least 10 feet wide, but those were proposals, not a record of what was built. I'm not counting on them.

Upper Lake Lafayette Was Built Alongside a Development

The east side's new trail is the clearest case of a trail riding on another project. A 2023 Blueprint budget workshop item reported a fully executed agreement with the Fallschase development covering the trail's design, permitting and construction, along with public parking and wayfinding signage. Blueprint's October snapshot calls the finished trail "a leveraging opportunity with the Fallschase Development." It says the trail links the Buck Lake Corridor to the recreation areas along Upper Lake Lafayette. It opened in May 2026.

Blueprint's 2025 annual report described the trail as a natural setting for walking, relaxing and watching wildlife, with an observation deck. Leon County lists a 2026 Florida Project Award of Merit for it.

This trail is the first finished piece of a much larger plan. The Lake Lafayette and St. Marks Regional Linear Park is meant to connect public recreation land east of Capital Circle Southeast, including Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park and Apalachee Regional Park. None of the sources I read say the open section connects directly to any of those parks yet. For now, treat it as its own lakeside walk, not a route to Tom Brown.

The Parks Behind the Fencing

The big parks are a different kind of project. They're built from scratch with a full set of features, and they take longer.

Northeast Park on Centerville Road, next to Roberts Elementary and Montford Middle, is planned on 50 acres. Blueprint's October snapshot lists two lighted baseball and softball fields, a lighted multipurpose field, four pickleball courts, a sports court, two sand volleyball courts, a playground, picnic shelters, walking trails, a community room and a concession stand. At the groundbreaking, the City of Tallahassee said construction was slated to finish by late 2026. The October snapshot now expects a public opening in mid-2027.

Market District Park covers about nine acres west of Maclay Boulevard and north of Maclay Commerce Drive. Plans call for paths, shaded gathering space, a play area, water-play features, restrooms and pickleball courts. WCTV reported in June that it was expected "next summer." The October snapshot says early 2027. If you've followed the Maclay Boulevard reopening, this park is the next piece of that same district to watch.

Orange-Meridian Park at South Orange Avenue and South Meridian Street is the one closest to finishing. Construction is expected to wrap up in late 2026, though no public opening date has been announced. Plans include walking trails, exercise stations, a children's play area, space for food trucks and fruit trees.

Two longer trail projects are moving more slowly. Capital Cascades Trail Segment 4 runs from the drainage-ditch convergence near Lake Bradford Road to Munson Slough at Springhill Road, with links to nearby neighborhoods and the St. Marks Trail. Construction started in September 2026, and completion is expected in early 2028. The 5.1-mile Lake Jackson Greenway, planned from Lake Ella to Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park, has Phase I finished and Phase II in design.

A Fall and Holiday Plan Built Around What's Open

Cooler weather is the obvious time to try the spring trails. Here's one way to fit them in around the city's December events:

  1. October and November weekends: Pick one new trail per weekend. Start with Debbie Lightsey if you ride, Four Oaks Park if you're bringing kids, or Upper Lake Lafayette if you want a quiet walk by the water.
  2. Saturday, December 5: The 40th annual Winter Festival takes over downtown from 3 to 10 p.m. The lighting ceremony is at 6 p.m. on South Monroe Street at Bloxham Park, and the nighttime parade starts at 7:10 p.m. Capital City Cyclists is promoting a 7 p.m. downtown ride the same night that welcomes everyone, tricycles and unicycles included.
  3. Saturday, December 12: The annual Holiday Stroll runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Cascades Park, 1001 South Gadsden Street.

If Blueprint's dates hold, Orange-Meridian Park will be the next new space on this list, followed by Market District Park in early 2027 and Northeast Park by mid-2027.
